Clothing, beauty products, electronics, and collectibles sell best on Mercari. Over the last few years, I’ve consistently sold vintage shirts and skincare products on the platform.

Here’s my breakdown of what sells best on Mercari, including the top-selling items on Mercari, how to sell items fast, and what items to avoid.

What sells best on Mercari? Quick answer

Top categories Examples Pricing
1. Clothing Nike, Lululemon, and vintage $10–$80, depending on condition and brand
2. Beauty Skincare bundles, fragrance sets, makeup $8–$60 depending on condition
3. Electronics Smartphones, chargers, headphones, gaming consoles and accessories $20–$300 depending on condition and brand
4. Collectibles Pokémon cards, anime figures, limited edition collectibles $2–$700+, depending on rarity and condition

Category 1: Clothing

Clothing is one of my most popular selling categories on Mercari. Knowing which types move fastest keeps your listings from sitting untouched. The difference between a slow closet cleanout and consistent sales comes down to the garment types you list.

Here are the top 2 clothing categories that have brought me the most success:

Branded basics: Nike, Lululemon, and others

Nike, Lululemon, and similar brands like Adidas carry built-in search demand. Buyers already know what they want before they land on your listing.

Many times, listing clothing in bundles sells better on Mercari than listing items one by one. For instance, Nike baby clothing sets with 4 to 6 pairs of tops and bottoms can go for around $38, and 4-piece Nike running sets often sell for about $30.

Vintage shirts

Driven by 90s nostalgia, many older Millennials and Gen Xers flock to Mercari for vintage shirts. Popular clothing includes band tees, sports teams, and rare screen-printed graphic shirts. These move on Mercari because the demand is emotional and the supply is finite. Some vintage shirts list as low as $3, but I’ve seen rare vintage band shirts sell for over $300.

Here’s an example of a vintage Pepsi shirt I sold a few months ago:

Sourcing price: $2 from my local thrift store

Total selling price (including buyer-paid shipping): $35 on Mercari

Fees (10% Mercari seller fee): $3.50

My profit ($35 – $2 – $3.50): $29.50

Instead of listing it as "vintage graphic tee," name the band, the tour, the team, the brand, or the year. That specificity is what helps your listing rank above the dozen others in the same category. Vague titles bury inventory that should be moving.

Category 2: Beauty

Beauty products move consistently on Mercari because buyers treat it as an alternative to full retail pricing. These products are always in demand, as buyers use them daily.

The platform generally allows the sale of most beauty products, as long as they’re not on Mercari’s list of prohibited items.

Here are the three beauty products that sell best on Mercari:

Cosmetics bundles

Many times, users will scroll past listings with one tube of lipstick or eyeliner. The key is to combine several cosmetic products together. Combos give buyers everything they want in one order, and at a lower price when compared to retail cosmetics.

You can list cosmetics bundles for under $15 to about $200, depending on quality and brand.

Skincare

Skincare sells on Mercari because buyers want products that are expensive at full retail price. Here’s an example of 50ml of Glossier facial lotion that I sourced from an overstock site and sold on Mercari:

Sourcing price: $15.75

Total selling price (including shipping): $60

Fees (10% Mercari seller fee): $6.00

My profit ($60 – $15.75 – $6.00): $38.25

Buyers in this category are cautious. If you’re selling second-hand, don’t write “gently used” on the listing. Describe the fill level in percentages, show the fill level in photos, and state the purchase date. Being transparent about the condition goes a long way in selling beauty products.

Fragrance

Fragrance buyers on Mercari look for discontinued scents, rare versions, and full bottles at lower prices. You can list perfumes and colognes from $15 to $100+, depending on fill and brand.

Category 3: Electronics

Electronics move fast on Mercari because buyers don’t want to pay retail prices and are usually happy to purchase second-hand. Here are the 3 most popular electronics categories on Mercari:

Phones

Buyers looking for phones already have a brand and price range in mind and act quickly when a listing matches it. Phones on Mercari list for under $50 to $400+, depending on brand and condition.

On your listing, mentioning clear battery health, carrier status, and storage details helps remove hesitation. Always check recently sold prices to position your listing competitively.

Electronics accessories

Electronic accessories like chargers, cases, and earbuds are Mercari bestsellers because buyers always need to replace old items, but they don’t want to pay retail prices. And, buyers don’t want to make the trip to a brick-and-mortar store just to buy some simple accessories for their devices.

Depending on brand and conditions, earbuds sell for under $20 to $150+, while phone chargers and cords can sell for under $10.

Gaming gear

Gaming gear like consoles, controllers, and games appeals to hobbyists and collectors who already know market value. A PlayStation 4 can sell for over $100, while the apple of older millennials’ eyes, a classic 8-bit Nintendo, can easily fetch over $200.

Listings that show condition clearly and confirm usability reduce buyer hesitation. Buyers in this category often act fast when something looks ready to use and is priced fairly. Gear that feels tested and complete sells without needing explanation.

Category 4: Collectibles

Collectibles on Mercari attract buyers searching for rare finds and better deals than eBay. Knowing which subcategories carry the most active demand tells you where to focus your sourcing and listing energy.

Pokémon cards

Mercari buyers looking for Pokémon cards arrive knowing the card name, set, and print run. Your listing should show clear photos of all four corners, state if the card is raw or graded, and name the specific set. Pokémon cards range from $2 for singles to $700+ for rare sets.

Niche hobby items

Die-cast models, vintage board games, and limited-run figures often sell above what a casual seller expects because the buyer pool, while small, is highly motivated.

For instance, Funko Pop variants can sell for over $100, and Dungeons and Dragons modules range from $10 for single figurines to over $200 for vintage sets.

Don’t price niche items against general market logic. Check what the last three sold for on Mercari instead. Demand in niche categories is real, but it lives in the sold history, not in assumptions.

How to make items sell fast on Mercari

Focus on pricing, list popular items, and use clear titles and descriptions to sell faster on Mercari. Even the best-selling items can become stale if you don’t list them correctly. Follow these steps to attract more buyer demand on Mercari:

Step 1: Price below market to create immediate demand

Many Mercari buyers filter by price and sort by recent activity. This means that pricing high and negotiating down will most likely work against you.

Before you even create a listing, always check sold items, not active ones (which show what sellers want). Sold listings show what buyers actually paid.

Price your item 5–10% below recent sales, and use Mercari Smart Pricing to show the absolute lowest price you’re willing to accept.

Step 2: List items buyers already search for

Listing rare items and waiting for the right buyer is a slow strategy. Start with recognizable brands and proven categories. These items already have search demand, increasing the chances that your listing gets seen.

Instead of listing low-demand items and hoping, focus on inventory with a clear sales track record. For instance, Nike clothing, Apple earbuds in good condition, or brand-new Estée Lauder lotion connect to buyers searching for those exact terms.

Step 3: Use simple titles and clear photos

Write your titles like you would describe items while talking to buyers in person. Buyers use specific keywords, so your title needs to match how they type. Include the brand, item type, size, color, and model number in that order.

Clear photos answer questions about color, condition, or size before buyers even ask. Use bright, natural light and show the front, back, tags, and any flaws. Instead of staging the item, lay it flat on a clean surface with nothing distracting in the frame.

Before listing, touch up your photos with a quality photo-editing tool.

Step 4: Consider shipping costs

Mercari gives you the option to let the buyer pay for shipping or cover shipping yourself.

If you go with Mercari’s shipping, always consider how it will affect buyers because it’s part of their total price that they see before they buy. For instance, a $15 item with $9 shipping loses to a $17 item with $4 shipping almost every time.

Small, lightweight items cost less to ship, which keeps your total price competitive without lowering your item price. Clothing in a poly mailer or a phone accessory in a padded envelope has an advantage over bulky items that add weight-related costs.

What doesn’t sell well on Mercari?

Generic, bulky, and overpriced items don’t sell well on Mercari. Listing the wrong things wastes time you could spend moving inventory that actually sells. These items stall consistently:

  • Unbranded or generic items: Products without a recognizable name struggle to gain search traffic. Buyers usually search for a brand, a known product name, or a category.
  • Bulky items: Large, heavy items often shift the buyer's focus from your asking price to the total cost at checkout. A $20 item with $18 shipping reads as a bad deal.
  • Oversaturated items: If 50 sellers have the same item and yours is priced identically to theirs, why would a buyer choose you? Visibility goes to the lowest credible price.
  • Listings with no price advantage over retail: If a buyer can get the same item new on Amazon for close to your price, they will. Buyers use Mercari to save money, and listings that don’t show a clear price difference lose out to faster, easier retail options.

Fast vs. profitable items on Mercari

Speed and profit often move in opposite directions on Mercari, and mixing them is where sellers lose time.

Clothing and beauty sell fast because prices are low and buyers decide quickly.

Electronics, collectibles, and designer items bring higher profit but take longer to sell. Buyers compare more and ask more questions before they commit.

I’ve found that a $12 Lululemon top often sells in 24 hours, if listed right. Graded Pokémon cards take time for the right buyer to show up.

The bottom line: Trying to sell quickly and get eye-popping margins splits your focus without increasing your results. Pick the approach that fits your inventory, your space, and how fast you need your money back.

FAQs

1. What sells fastest on Mercari for beginners?

Low-priced, brand-name items sell fastest for beginners. Clothing from brands like Nike or Lululemon, small electronics, and beauty bundles tend to move the quickest. Buyers already trust the products, and if they’re priced below retail value, many buyers will make offers.

2. How do I know if something will sell on Mercari before listing it?

You can know if something will sell on Mercari before listing it by checking sold listings, not active ones. Look for items with consistent recent sales and compare how many have sold versus how many are listed. If demand is low or there are too many competing listings, the item will likely sit.

3. How do advanced sellers scale sales on Mercari?

Advanced sellers scale sales on Mercari by focusing on volume, pricing discipline, and data. They list consistently, track sold comps before sourcing, and prioritize items with proven demand. Advanced sellers don’t chase high margins on single items. They move inventory quickly and reinvest profits into faster-selling categories.
