How to make money on Etsy in 2026
You can make money on Etsy by offering a product that’s in-demand and providing competitive pricing. But opening a shop doesn't make you profitable by default.
True Etsy profitability depends on selling the right product at the right prices, which you learn by doing your research and accounting for costs and platform fees.
Over the years, I’ve helped new Etsy sellers figure out their niche and market their products on the platform. Here’s my 6-step process that you can use to help you make money on Etsy.
How to make money on Etsy in 6 steps
- Find a product people already want
- Calculate your profit before setting your price
- Build listings around Etsy search intent
- Use photos that help shoppers evaluate the product
- Learn what sells
- Protect your margins as sales grow
Step 1: Find a product people already want
By finding a product people already want, you’ll confirm that buyers actively spend money on an item before you invest in making it. Find out what folks are buying by searching Etsy.
Sometimes, you can find publicly visible sold listings on Etsy to see what similar products have sold for. But because sellers can hide sold listings, use them alongside active listings, reviews, and other demand signals. Study listings, prices, review volume, and recurring complaints. Note down engagement and use this to analyze demand.
For example, if you’re considering personalized dog tags, you might find strong sales but repeated complaints about limited sizing. Repeated buyer complaints can show you how to improve your product. Look for common problems, then find ways your product can solve them.
Step 2: Calculate your profit before setting your price
Profit is what remains from each Etsy sale. You need to first deduct every expense tied to making, selling, and fulfilling the order. Keep these in mind:
- Know the difference between revenue and profit: Sellers sometimes confuse revenue and profit. Revenue per sale is what a buyer pays. Profit per sale is what remains after materials, fees, and shipping (if applicable).
- Track production costs: Production cost is the actual price of materials and labor per item. Always record the materials you purchase if you’re making crafts, and the time it takes you to produce them.
- Etsy seller fees: Etsy charges sellers a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee, and payment processing fees, which are 3% + $0.25 in the US. Take these into account when setting your listing prices.
- Advertising costs: Etsy automatically runs Offsite Ads on your behalf, which appear on external sites like Google, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. If you have under $10,000 in annual Etsy sales, Offsite Ads are optional, with a 15% fee on attributed orders. Above $10,000, participation is required, and the fee drops to 12%. The good news is it caps these fees at $100 per order.
- Packaging and shipping expenses: Always record the costs of getting a product safely to a buyer's door. Even if you use Etsy shipping labels, you’ll still need to account for the cost of packaging, bubble wrap, and foam. These expenses add up over time and can cut into your margin.
- Set a price that covers costs and leaves a workable margin: Start with your total per-item cost, then add a markup that produces your target profit. Compare similar Etsy listings to see what sellers expect, but don’t copy their prices because you most likely can’t see your competitors’ costs.
Step 3: Build listings around Etsy search intent
Search intent is what a buyer expects to find when they enter a particular search query. Don’t try to use language that sounds cute or clever. Get to the point.
For instance, a vague listing titled “Boho Dream Catcher Magic” provides Etsy with fewer useful product-specific terms than a title that clearly identifies the item and its important details. A better one is a title built around “walnut wood cutting board personalized wedding gift” because it can include several relevant terms buyers may use when searching for that product.
Category fields help Etsy understand your product and match it with relevant searches. Titles, descriptions, and tags provide additional search information. Relevant listing information can help your product appear for appropriate searches. Photos help shoppers evaluate your item after they click on the listing.
Step 4: Use photos that help shoppers evaluate the product
Photos help you earn shoppers’ trust because they use them to decide whether your listing is worth clicking. Here’s how to present your photos:
- Cover image clarity: The first image is the single photo shoppers see before clicking. Treat this picture as the most important one to attract the most shoppers.
- Product angles: Etsy allows up to 20 photos per listing. Show useful angles, including the back or interior when relevant, so shoppers have more information to evaluate condition, construction, fit, or function. Use photo editing software to improve image quality.
- Details and dimensions: Detail shots isolate scale, material, and variation so buyers understand exactly what arrives. Consider taking pictures alongside a measuring tape or coins to give shoppers a clear idea of size.
- Disclosing flaws: Photograph relevant flaws and describe them accurately so buyers can evaluate the item's condition before purchasing. For instance, if you’re selling vintage clothing, take close-ups of stains or other imperfections.
- Digital mockups: If you’re selling digital downloads, provide digital mockups, which are visual previews showing exactly what a buyer receives without physical shipping. Accurate mockups prevent buyers from assuming print quality or file formats they didn't actually purchase.
Step 5: Learn what sells
Learn what sells by building enough listings. Building listings gives you a real sample size within your niche before drawing any conclusions about what Etsy shoppers want from you.
Avoid drawing conclusions from only a small number of listings. As you publish comparable products, use Etsy Stats to compare views, visits, favorites, orders, and revenue and identify patterns over time. Etsy officially provides those metrics.
Publishing new listings consistently gives each new product a chance to reach shoppers because Etsy gives new listings a small, temporary search boost. Some Etsy sellers also report better results from spreading new listings throughout the week.
However, Etsy warns against creating or renewing listings solely to chase this temporary boost. Add new products when you have good inventory ready to sell. Don’t create or renew listings just to get a short-term boost in Etsy search.
Step 6: Protect your margins as sales grow
As sales increase, protect your margins by monitoring per-item costs, fees, advertising expenses, and fulfillment costs as order volume grows. Follow these pointers:
- Balance order volume and business health: Order volume is the raw count of sales a shop completes in a given period. Even though it exists as a metric, don’t use it as an overall indicator of your financial health. You could have a sold-out weekend only to discover half of those orders shipped at a loss.
- Never let up on cost monitoring: Track all your materials, production, shipping, advertising, and Etsy fees for every single product you make and list. Costs rarely stay fixed because suppliers and carriers change their rates. Every month, review your costs and margins to catch any erosion before it compounds across hundreds of orders.
- Repricing or discontinuing weak products: Sometimes, demand for specific products will dip, and you’ll need to adjust an item’s price or details. If you notice continually weakening demand over a long period, consider discontinuing these items.
- Reinvesting based on profitability: Reinvest in items that produce the best margins, and evaluate using Etsy Ads (if you make under $10,000 annually) based on whether the additional sales justify the advertising cost.
What can you sell on Etsy to make money?
Etsy limits what sellers can list to handmade/seller-created goods, vintage items, digital files, and craft supplies. To learn more about Etsy selling, read our article that breaks down best-selling items and categories.
Here’s an overview of the categories you can list on Etsy:
Handmade and seller-created products
Handmade and seller-created products can include physical goods you make yourself as well as original designs produced by a partner. Etsy requires sellers to accurately represent how an item was made and disclose relevant production partners. Many buyers come to Etsy searching for unique, handmade items. Some are willing to pay a premium.
Digital products
Digital products on Etsy can be premade files available for download or custom digital files created and delivered to the buyer after purchase. They include items like printables, templates, digital planners, and design files. If you choose this category, you won’t need to deal with physical inventory and shipping costs.
Once you upload a file, the same listing sells repeatedly without restocking. But fees, advertising, customer support, updates, and customization can still affect the cost and labor associated with each sale.
Vintage items
Vintage items, according to Etsy, are products that are at least 20 years old. The category covers clothing, collectibles, jewelry, and home goods. Etsy enforces this age threshold specifically to separate the vintage category from general resale marketplaces like eBay or Poshmark.
Selling vintage means documenting an item's era. Provide accurate information about when a vintage item was made and describe relevant identifying details accurately. A style tag alone doesn’t prove that an item meets Etsy's 20-year vintage requirement. If the date is inaccurate or unsupported, Etsy may ask for documentation or remove the listing.
For instance, if you’re listing a 1990s band tee, you should note the decade and tag style as evidence that the item qualifies as vintage.
Craft supplies
Craft supplies are the raw materials and components folks use to build their own products, such as beads, fabric, patterns, and tools. Etsy allows qualifying craft and party supplies because they enable buyers to create items or personalize special occasions.
