Many Mercari sellers price by gut feeling, snap a couple of blurry photos, and wonder why their listings sit for weeks. I've helped sellers set up and optimize hundreds of Mercari listings, and the difference between a stale closet and steady sales usually comes down to a handful of habits.

Here are 9 tested Mercari selling tips covering pricing, photos, descriptions, and shipping that will help you turn more views into sales and keep your inventory actually moving.

9 Mercari selling tips: All summed up

➜ 1. Research sold listings before setting your price

➜ 2. Use clear photos from multiple angles

➜ 3. Put buyer search terms in your title

➜ 4. Write descriptions that answer buyer questions

➜ 5. Price with room to accept offers

➜ 6. Weigh packaged items before choosing shipping

➜ 7. Use Mercari promotions strategically

➜ 8. Provide knowledgeable responses

➜ 9. Ship carefully and quickly

1. Research sold listings before setting your price

By looking at sellers’ sold listings on Mercari, you can see what buyers paid for comparable items before you set a price. Active listings reveal current asking prices, but completed sales provide stronger evidence of what buyers have paid.

Check comparable products for differences in condition, model, included accessories, and shipping costs before using their sale prices as benchmarks.

2. Use clear photos from multiple angles

Photos are one of the first things buyers see in Mercari’s search results, and they help a buyer decide if your item is worth clicking. Mercari allows up to 12 of them.

Six-step infographic titled, 'Use Clear Photos from Multiple Angles'; steps include: 1) use bright, even lighting; 2) photograph the entire item; 3) show multiple angles; 4) capture labels and details; 5) photograph wear and defects; 6) use a clean background.

Here’s how to improve your images:

  1. Use bright, even lighting: Bright, even lighting is illumination that removes shadows and color distortion from a photo. It helps color and condition stand out so buyers can judge your item by what they see. Photograph items near a window during peak daylight hours or use a daylight-balanced LED light for consistent, neutral lighting.
  2. Photograph the entire item: A full-item photo shows the whole object in one frame. It helps buyers see the item’s actual shape and proportions. Place a measuring tape next to the item when buyers need a clear sense of its size.
  3. Show multiple angles: Different angles reveal parts of an item that a single photo may not capture. Choose views based on what buyers need to inspect, such as the front, back, sides, bottom, inside, or other relevant areas. This provides a more complete visual record of the item’s condition. If you’re selling sneakers, photograph them from the front, sides, back, and soles.
  4. Capture labels and identifying details: Label photos are close-ups of tags, brand marks, size stamps, or serial numbers. Buyers use these to confirm authenticity and fit before trusting the listing text. Don’t forget to photograph the care label, if applicable, so buyers know how to properly clean and care for the item.
  5. Photograph wear and defects: If your item has scratches, stains, loose stitching, or missing pieces, photograph them exactly as they exist. Disclosing these issues upfront helps build buyer trust and reduce the chances of returns.
  6. Use a clean background: Photograph your items with a clean, plain, and uncluttered background. Clutter pulls attention away from the product and makes you look unprofessional and sloppy. Invest in software that offers background removal and mannequin features to help items appear professional and clean.

3. Put buyer search terms in your title

Use listing titles that include clear, relevant terms buyers are likely to type into the search bar. Mercari recommends accurate keywords and clearly identifying the brand when known because these details can improve a listing’s visibility in search.

Prioritize useful product information such as the brand, model, product type, and size. Avoid filling the title with vague adjectives or unrelated keywords that don’t help identify the item.

For example, “Nike Air Max 90 Women’s Size 8” gives buyers more searchable product information than “Cute Comfy Nike Girl Shoes.”

4. Write descriptions that answer buyer questions

Detailed product descriptions give buyers information they can’t always determine from the title and photos alone. Cover the item’s specifications, condition, included components, and relevant measurements so buyers can evaluate what they will receive.

Describe exactly what you're selling

Give buyers specific product details such as the model, size, color, materials, and included accessories when applicable. These details also help clarify exactly what comes with the purchase. For example, write “Kate Spade crossbody, black leather, gold-tone hardware, dust bag included” instead of simply “purse for sale.”

Explain the item's condition

Describe visible wear, damage, modifications, missing pieces, and other condition details that could matter to a buyer. Photos document these issues, and the description provides additional context about where they appear and how significant they are. For example, note “small scuff on left toe” and include a clear photo showing the affected area.

Add useful measurements

Provide relevant dimensions when size can’t be determined from photos or a standard size label. Clothing measurements might include chest, waist, inseam, sleeve, or garment length, while furniture may require height, width, and depth.

For instance, list “chest: 20 inches; sleeve: 24 inches” for a men’s medium jacket.

5. Price with room to accept offers

Price your item with a premium to allow for offers so you won’t drop below the minimum amount you're willing to accept. Mercari allows buyers to submit offers, and sellers can accept, decline, or counter them. Since most Mercari buyers expect a deal, you’ll need to account for potential negotiation.

Don’t forget to factor in Mercari’s selling fee, shipping costs you cover, and your cost for the item into your minimum acceptable price. When I’m helping new sellers get started on Mercari, I always recommend they add a 10–20% premium. I’ve found that this markup often competes with similarly priced items and leaves enough room for negotiating a profitable price.

Here’s a recent pricing example from a piece of Pyrex cookware that a colleague sold a few weeks ago:

Similar sold item price: $18.99

Sourcing cost (estate sale): $3.50

Negotiation premium added to comp (~15-20%): +$3.00

Listed price: $21.99

Accepted offer: $19.00

Mercari selling fee (flat 10% of item + buyer-paid shipping): −$1.90

Shipping label cost (seller covers, offering "free shipping"): −$5.49

Net profit: $8.11

6. Weigh packaged items before choosing shipping

By providing accurate shipping information, you can avoid unexpected charges that can reduce your profit after a sale. Here’s how to properly weigh and package your items:

Weigh the item after packaging

Use the total shipping weight after packing your item into a box or mailer with padding, wrapping, and other packing materials. Mercari requires sellers using its prepaid labels to select a weight class that covers the complete packaged shipment.

Weighing only the item can underestimate its shipping weight and lead to additional charges if the package exceeds the selected label. For example, a mug may move into a higher weight class after you add a box and protective padding.

Check package dimensions

Measure the length, width, and height of your package. Mercari prepaid labels can be rated using the greater of the package’s actual weight or dimensional weight. A large lightweight package may require a higher shipping weight than the scale alone suggests.

For example, a boxed lamp could have a dimensional weight that exceeds its actual weight because of the amount of space the package occupies.

Compare available shipping options, including self-shipping

Review the eligible shipping options Mercari provides for your package’s weight and dimensions before selecting a label. Available prepaid services can vary by carrier, package specifications, and item type, and sellers can also choose to ship on their own when appropriate.

If you self-ship, compare the available rates and requirements before deciding which option fits the sale. For example, a seller shipping jeans can enter the packaged weight and dimensions and compare the eligible Mercari prepaid options shown for that shipment.

7. Use Mercari promotions strategically

Mercari provides promotion tools that can increase a listing’s visibility or send discounts to interested buyers. Follow these pointers:

  • Promote listings with buyer interest: Views, clicks, and likes can show how shoppers are interacting with a listing. Use these signals to decide which action fits the listing. For example, consider sending an offer on a shirt that has accumulated several likes.
  • Know how different promotions affect your price: Mercari’s pricing and promotion tools work differently. Smart Pricing automatically adjusts your listing price based on market demand while staying above your set floor price. Promote permanently lowers the price by at least 5% from its historical lowest price, while Offers to Likers requires at least a 10% reduction and lasts 24 hours.
  • Protect your minimum acceptable price: Set the lowest price you're willing to accept after accounting for the item’s cost, Mercari’s selling fee, and any shipping expenses you cover. Compare that floor with the required promotion or offer price before applying a discount.
  • Send offers to interested buyers: The Offers to Likers feature lets you send a temporary discounted price to shoppers who’ve liked an item. Mercari requires the offer to be at least 10% below the listing’s historical lowest price, and the offer remains valid for 24 hours. Learn how to use this feature and convert more sales with our Offers to Likers article.
  • Track which promotions produce sales: Compare how your listings perform by tracking price reductions, buyer engagement, resulting sale price, and whether the item ultimately sold. Over time, these results can help you decide when to use Promote, Offers to Likers, or another pricing strategy.

8. Provide knowledgeable responses

Prompt, informed responses give interested buyers the information they need to evaluate an item or offer. Here’s what you need:

  • Answer product questions promptly: Respond to buyer questions as promptly as practical, especially when someone needs additional information about condition, dimensions, included accessories, or other product details. A clear answer can help the buyer evaluate whether the item meets their needs.
  • Keep specifications handy: Record useful measurements and product specifications when you create the listing so you can accurately reference them later. Depending on the item, this might include dimensions, model numbers, materials, compatibility information, or clothing measurements.
  • Counter reasonable offers: You can accept, decline, or counter offers submitted by buyers. If an initial offer falls below the amount you're willing to accept, a counteroffer lets you propose another price without accepting the original amount. The buyer then has 24 hours to accept or decline the counteroffer.
  • Keep communication inside Mercari: Only use Mercari’s messaging system for communication about listings and transactions. Mercari recommends that you keep communication within its app and warns users against sharing personal information such as email addresses and phone numbers in chat.

9. Ship carefully and quickly

Careful and quick shipping involves packing an item properly and sending it out on time, which helps you meet Mercari’s shipping requirements and reduces avoidable problems after an item sells. Follow these 3 steps:

Step 1: Package for the actual item

Choose packaging based on the item’s size, weight, shape, and fragility. Fragile products generally need more protection than soft goods such as clothing, so use a sturdy box with adequate cushioning and fill empty space so the item doesn’t move during transit.

If you’ve just sold a ceramic dish, pack it in a sturdy box with enough cushioning to protect it and prevent movement during shipment.

Step 2: Ship within Mercari's requested window

Mercari asks sellers to ship orders within 3 business days of purchase. Once you hand the package to the correct carrier, confirm the shipment through the Order Status page. Buyers may be able to request cancellation before shipment, so always send sold items within the requested timeframe.

Step 3: Confirm the correct shipment is leaving

If you’re sending out multiple items on the same day, match each packed item with its corresponding order and shipping label before handing packages to the carrier. This check becomes especially useful when you're fulfilling several Mercari orders at the same time because labels or items can be mixed up.

For example, compare each package with its order information and shipping label before taking several completed orders to the carrier.

  • Marketplace-specific pricing rules: Save pricing templates for each marketplace and apply them automatically during bulk crosslisting. You can account for differences between Mercari and your other sales channels without manually repricing every item.
  • Automatic delisting? Handled: When an item sells, Nifty’s sales detection automatically delists it from your other connected marketplaces. That reduces the risk of selling the same item twice and having to cancel an order.
  • Bulk tools = no busywork: Relist and manage inventory in bulk instead of updating Mercari listings individually. You can also schedule drafts to publish later and configure automatic discounts that increase over time.
  • Analytics and profits are real: Track sales, fees, profit margins, top sellers, and slower-moving inventory from one dashboard. Use that information to see which products perform well and make better decisions about what to list next.
