I've used Poshmark Vacation Mode for short weekend trips, 10-day breaks, and the surprise trip to the hospital after I broke my clavicle while mountain biking. Poshmark Vacation Mode pauses new purchases while keeping listings visible. Activate it via Account → My Seller Tools → Vacation Hold → Set your dates, and save.

Here's when to use it, how to activate it, alternatives, how to prepare for Vacation Mode, and what to do when you return.

Note: Throughout the article, I use Vacation Mode and a Vacation Hold interchangeably. They mean the same thing: pausing buyers’ ability to purchase from your closet.

What is Poshmark Vacation Mode? The quick answer

Poshmark’s Vacation Mode (or Vacation Hold) lets sellers temporarily mark their listings as unavailable, preventing shoppers from purchasing them.

Activating Vacation Mode on Poshmark is simple:

  1. Select your account tab
  2. Open “My Seller Tools”
  3. Find “Vacation Hold” and toggle it on
  4. Enter start and end dates
  5. Click the “Save” button

Once you turn on a Vacation Hold, Poshmark displays a banner in your closet to let buyers know you’re away.

Vacation Mode doesn’t block your listings from view. Poshmark buyers can still browse, like, comment on items, and follow your closet.

What happens when you use Vacation Mode

Vacation mode changes how buyers interact with your closet and your seller responsibilities. Here’s a closer look at what happens to your listings when you turn on Vacation Mode:

  • Listing visibility remains: Vacation Mode generally marks your listings as not for sale rather than hiding them. Shoppers can still view your closet and may see your items in search or feeds, but they can’t purchase them until you turn off vacation mode.‍
  • Social features continue: Buyers can still like and share your listings. Existing likes, shares, and comments stay on your listings while you’re away. Buyers can also view your profile and engage socially, but they can’t buy anything.
  • ‍Existing orders are still your responsibility: Vacation Mode doesn’t apply to orders confirmed before you place the hold. Any sales made before you turned it on still need to be shipped under the normal shipping expectations. A vacation hold simply stops new purchases from being made while you’re away.‍
  • New listings during vacation mode: You can still create new listings in Vacation Mode. However, your vacation hold doesn’t apply to these new listings, so they’ll be available for purchase. You must manually set each new listing to “Not For Sale” through the editing page.

Does a Poshmark Vacation Hold hurt sales or visibility?

Yes, a Poshmark Vacation Hold can temporarily hurt sales or visibility because you’re not actively sharing, listing, or engaging. Poshmark even mentions that because you’re not engaging with shoppers, their engagement with you naturally declines.

However, using Vacation Mode is usually better than late shipments and cancellations while you’re away.

You can often bounce back after short breaks, especially if you resume sharing, listing, and sending offers as soon as you return.

When you should use Poshmark Vacation Mode

Vacation Hold is best for when you encounter the following situations:

  • Full travel scenarios: Several day trips that cause you to lose shipping access are strong candidates for Vacation Hold, so you don’t return to overdue orders and frustrated buyers.
  • Illness, injury, or emergency: In sudden crises like hospitalization or family emergencies, enabling Vacation Hold stops additional orders when you’re unable to pack and ship.
  • High‑volume considerations: Higher‑volume sellers who normally move many items each week have more to lose if multiple orders go late at once. Vacation Hold gives sellers time to fill backlogs, ship on time, protect ratings, and build buyer trust.

When you shouldn’t use Vacation Mode

Vacation Mode doesn’t suit every seller type, and overusing it can slow your momentum. Here’s when you shouldn’t use it:

  • Breaks under 3 days: For quick weekend trips or 1- to 3-day delays, leave your closets open and ship as soon as you return.
  • You have a smaller closet: If you have relatively few listings, gaps in sharing and adding listings can have a more powerful effect on your visibility.
  • Momentum-building periods: After launching a new closet or adding a lot of fresh inventory, you’ll need to promote your listings. Steady activity like sharing, sending offers, and hosting live Posh Shows helps you grow. Pausing too soon can slow your momentum.
  • Promo weeks and sales events: During events like Closet Clear Out and other sitewide promos, you can drive more traffic and sales. Being on Vacation Hold in those windows means you’ll miss purchases you might have made if your closet were open.

Alternatives to Poshmark Vacation Mode

Can’t decide if you need to put your listings on a vacation hold? Here are some other options:

Alternative #1: Use an extended shipping time strategy

Poshmark expects sellers to ship within a couple of days, but if you clearly communicate to your buyers that shipping time will be longer than expected, you can avoid vacation mode.

However, buyers must be aware of the longer shipping period, and you’ll need their written confirmation. Otherwise, buyers may cancel orders and give you bad reviews.

Tell the buyer the exact day you’ll ship. Message them once or twice beforehand to reaffirm the shipping date and let them know you haven’t forgotten their order.

You might have to sweeten the extended shipping time by offering a discount or perks, such as vouchers for future discounts.

Tip: Adding a clear note like “Ships after [date]” in listing descriptions can help set expectations. However, it doesn’t override Poshmark’s shipping policies or buyers’ ability to cancel. A clear “ships after” note can be practical for small closets, but it works best paired with prompt communication and realistic time away.

Alternative #2: Manual order management

For very short trips (a couple of days), consider leaving your closet open and simply declining offers that you can’t fulfill. However, don’t ignore buyer messages, and don’t refuse bundle requests.

Alternative #3: Temporary sharing reduction

If you still have phone access on a short trip, you can keep active by reducing shares rather than stopping entirely. Sharing a few times a day keeps listings live and purchasable, even if your engagement temporarily slows.

How to prepare your closet before turning on Vacation Mode

Setting and forgetting Vacation Mode without preparation can result in forgotten orders, bad reviews, and burned bridges with buyers. Here’s a step-by-step preparation guide:

Step 1: Review and manage active offers

Go through all outstanding offers and either accept or decline them before you turn on a Vacation Hold. Remember to start shipping procedures and communicate tracking details with buyers for accepted offers.

Step 2: Check and resolve open bundles

Look at any active bundle conversations and either complete the sale and begin packing, or send a clear message about your break and expected ship date.

Step 3: Communicate with interested buyers

Send quick messages to recent commenters or active negotiators about your leave. You can also post a note in your closet with your return date so interested shoppers know when you’ll be back.

Step 4: Clean up and organize inventory

Use the pause to tidy your closet. Review sold items, drafts, and outdated listings. When you turn off your Vacation Hold, shoppers see an organized and up-to-date selection. You avoid a big cleanup job later.

How to bounce back after you turn off Vacation Mode

To bounce back after Vacation Mode, relist important items, spark sales with discounts and new offers, and restore your engagement. Reactivating your closet after Vacation Hold works best when you focus on steady activity. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Gradually ramp up sharing activity

After you turn Vacation Hold off, resume sharing your listings at a comfortable, human pace. Gradually work back up to your usual volume. Sharing too much and too quickly could land you in Poshmark Jail.

Some sellers switch off their vacation hold on the last day of their time away. This method gives a jump-start to sharing, sending offers, and liking. They can also ship items within Poshmark’s shipping window if something sells.

Step 2: Prioritize relisting key items

Start by relisting seasonal pieces and listings that already have likes and comments. Refreshing these can resurface them in search and “For You” feeds, increasing the chances of more engagement.

Step 3: Use offers and price drops to spark sales

Send new offers to likers, especially on items with multiple likes. Consider small price drops to encourage fast sales and rebuild momentum after your break.

Step 4: Rebuild engagement signals

Share other closets and follow accounts in your category. Respond promptly to messages so more shoppers see you’re active again, which can help revive traffic to your closet.

FAQs

1. How long can Poshmark Vacation Mode stay on?

Poshmark’s Vacation Hold can stay on for as long as you need it, since you choose the start and end dates when you set it up. Still, very long breaks can slow your momentum and visibility. Most sellers reserve Vacation Hold for times when they truly can’t ship and then resume normal activity as soon as they’re back.

2. Can buyers still like items when I set a Vacation Hold on Poshmark?

Yes, buyers can still like items when you set a Vacation Hold on Poshmark. Shoppers can also still view your closet, follow you, and often share or comment on listings. However, they can’t complete a purchase until you turn the hold off. In other words, social engagement can continue, but the Vacation Hold blocks new orders while you’re away.

3. What happens if I create a new listing when Vacation Mode is turned on?

New listings you create while your closet is on Vacation Hold are set to Available and do not inherit the Not For Sale status automatically. If you list while you’re away, you need to open each new listing’s edit page and manually switch it to Not For Sale so buyers can’t purchase it until you’re ready to ship.
