Is Depop legit? 3 scams + how to stay safe (2026)

Yes, Depop is legit. eBay bought it from Etsy in 2026, and orders paid through Depop checkout are covered by Depop Protection. But Depop is a peer-to-peer marketplace, so you’re buying from an individual seller, and that protection ends the moment you pay or chat off the app.

I went through Depop's own Protection and safety pages and its recent Trustpilot reviews. If you’re about to buy something but want to stay on the safer side, I’ve covered how to vet a seller and spot a scam before you pay. If you sell on Depop, you’ll see which disputes Depop won’t cover and what proof to keep so you don’t lose them.

Depop is legit: TL;DR

  • eBay bought Depop from Etsy in 2026, and Depop Protection refunds buyers in the U.S., U.K., and Australia who pay through Depop checkout.
  • Depop Protection doesn’t cover money you send through PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, Zelle, or a bank transfer.
  • The most common scams are off-app payment requests, dropshipped fast fashion listed as vintage, and phishing emails that copy Depop’s branding.
  • Seller protection only covers items lost or damaged in transit and shipped with a Depop Shipping label, up to $300, £250, or A$450.
  • U.S., U.K., and Australian sellers pay no Depop selling fee, only a payment processing fee on each sale.

Is Depop legit? Quick verdict

Yes, Depop is a legitimate resale marketplace, but it's only as safe as the person on the other side of the sale. Depop holds no inventory. You pay through Depop, and an individual seller ships the item.

As a company, it’s stable. Depop was founded in 2011 and processed about $1 billion in gross merchandise sales in 2025. Etsy bought it in 2021 and sold it to eBay on July 30, 2026.

On Trustpilot, Depop scores 3.1 out of 5 from 8,294 reviews (as of October 2026). That beats Poshmark, Mercari, and eBay, which all score around 1.2.

Of those reviews, 38% are 5-star, and 42% are 1-star, leaving 20% spread across 2 to 4 stars. Reviewers mostly describe either a smooth purchase or a dispute that went badly.

Is Depop safe? What Depop Protection covers for buyers and sellers

Depop is safe to buy from and sell on as long as the whole transaction stays inside the app. Depop Protection for buyers refunds your full purchase price when a qualifying order goes wrong. Depop Protection for sellers only covers parcels lost or damaged in transit.

What Depop Protection covers

Aspect Buyers Sellers
What’s covered Item never arrives, arrives damaged, or is significantly not as described Item lost or damaged in transit, including on a return
How the sale must happen Paid through Depop checkout with a card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Klarna Sold through the Buy button and shipped with a Depop Shipping label to the address on your sales receipt
Time limit Report the problem within 30 days of purchase Ship within 5 days of the sale
Maximum covered Full purchase price, including shipping, fees, and taxes $300 / £250 / A$450, including shipping and taxes
Where it applies U.S., U.K., and Australia U.S., U.K., and Australia

What Depop Protection doesn’t cover

Aspect Buyers Sellers
Off-app deals Payments sent by PayPal, bank transfer, Venmo, Cash App, or Zelle Sales made outside the Buy button, including PayPal, Venmo, or bank transfers
Shipping – Postage you buy yourself (such as Pirate Ship or USPS), or a parcel sent to an address the buyer messages you
Timing Claims reported more than 30 days after purchase Items shipped more than 5 days after the sale
Value “Trades” set up as two $1 listings (you’re only covered for the $1) Sales over $300 / £250 / A$450
Item or claim type Returns for the wrong size or a change of mind Items on Depop’s prohibited items list, and “not as described” claims, which Depop decides case by case
Location Buyers outside the U.S., U.K., and Australia Sellers outside the U.S., U.K., and Australia

What buyers should know

  • You have 30 days from the day you buy something to report a problem, not 30 days from delivery. U.S. sellers get up to 10 days to ship, so if your seller takes all 10, a third of your window is gone before the item is even in the mail.
  • If your order hasn’t shipped after 5 days, message the seller. If you don’t hear back, open a case in the Resolution Center. Depop decides each claim at its own discretion, so film yourself opening the parcel and screenshot your chat with the seller.

According to Depop’s safety guide, money you send a seller privately through PayPal, bank transfer, or any other method isn’t protected. If a seller asks you to pay outside the app to “save on fees,” report their account.

Returns for the wrong size or a change of mind are up to the seller, so ask before you buy. Our Depop return policy guide explains how returns work.

What sellers should know

If you buy your own postage through Pirate Ship or USPS to save a dollar, you lose this cover. If you choose Depop Shipping when you list the item and then ship another way, Depop can also cancel the order and refund the buyer.

You can compare rates in this Depop shipping prices guide.

Note for sellers in the U.K. and Australia: Seller protection also requires a Depop Shipping label. U.K. sellers ship these through Evri.

Depop is rolling out Depop Shipping to Australian sellers in stages. If you listed an item before you got access, you have to ship it manually, and seller protection won’t cover it.

3 common Depop scams (and how to avoid them)

Most Depop scammers try to get you off the app. Some ask you to pay them directly through Venmo or PayPal, and others send you a link to a fake Depop login page to steal your password.

Bitdefender lists these as the most common Depop scams. Depop also warns against paying outside the app in its safety guide, because Depop Protection doesn’t cover those payments.

Scam What it looks like Red flag What to do
1. Off-app payment request Seller offers a discount for Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal Friends & Family "DM me on Insta," "my Depop is glitching" Pay only through Depop checkout and report the account
2. Dropshipped fast fashion A $6 Shein or AliExpress top listed as "vintage Y2K" for $30 Stock photos, every size in stock, 2–4 week shipping Reverse image search the photos before buying
3. Phishing Email or text "from Depop" asking you to verify your account or claim a payment Links to non-depop.com sites, urgent deadlines Log in through the app only and turn on two-factor authentication

1. Off-app payment requests

A seller offers you $10 off if you pay through Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal Friends & Family to “skip the fees.” Once you pay outside Depop checkout, Depop Protection no longer covers you, and PayPal excludes Friends & Family payments from its own Purchase Protection.

In another version, you ask a seller a question in Depop chat, and they reply that their Depop messages are glitching and ask you to DM them on Instagram.

How to avoid it: Keep every message and payment inside Depop. In its safety guide, Depop tells users never to share an email address, phone number, or bank details with anyone on the app, and to report anyone who tries to move the chat elsewhere.

2. Dropshipped fast fashion sold as vintage

A dropshipper lists an item they don’t own. When you pay, they order the same piece from Shein, AliExpress, or Temu for a few dollars and have it shipped straight to your address.

Depop’s dropshipping policy bans mass-produced items bought to order from catalogs or other marketplaces, including ones listed with supplier photos. Depop only allows dropshipping for handcrafted or print-on-demand items the seller designed.

How to avoid it: You’ll still find these listings in search, so run the photos through Google Lens before you buy. If the same image appears on a Shein, Temu, or AliExpress product page, skip it.

Also watch for shipping times of 2 to 4 weeks and a “vintage” top offered in sizes S to XL. Vintage sellers usually have 1 of each item, in a single size.

3. Phishing messages and fake Depop emails

Scammers send messages, emails, and texts that use Depop’s logo and branding. The message asks you to confirm a payment or reset your password through a link, which opens a fake Depop login page. If you log in there, the scammer gets your username and password.

Official Depop emails come from an @depop.com address. Depop also notifies you of every sale in the app, so if an email says you’ve made a sale, open the app and check before you click anything.

How to avoid it: Open the Depop app directly instead of tapping links in emails or texts. Turn on two-factor authentication in your Depop settings. Depop rolled it out across the platform in 2021.

If you’ve already typed your password into a fake page, change it in the app and contact Depop Support.

How to spot a bad Depop seller in 30 seconds

You can vet most Depop sellers from their profile before you message them. Run these five checks on anything over $30:

Check Where to look Looks fine Red flag
1. Account age + activity "Active" status under the username Active in the last few days, sold items going back months Joined this week, or last active over a week ago
2. Review count + wording Reviews tab Dozens of reviews that mention specifics ("pit-to-pit was accurate") Zero reviews on a $200+ branded item, or repeated "never shipped"
3. Price vs. sold comps Similar items in other shops' Sold sections Within the range similar items actually sold for A $400 item listed for $80
4. Photo style The listing photos Same background and lighting across the shop, flaws shown up close Studio shots, cropped-head models, a different background in every listing
5. Reverse image search Google Lens on a listing photo No matches, or matches only to this seller The same photo on eBay, Shein, or another seller's shop

Pro tip: On a computer, open the listing in Chrome, right-click a photo, and choose Search with Google Lens. The results open in a sidebar, so you can check for stolen photos and price comps without leaving the tab.

A "message before buying" note in a bio is not a red flag on its own. It usually means the seller crosslists on Poshmark, eBay, or Mercari and wants to confirm the item hasn't already sold elsewhere.

If you still aren’t sure, ask the seller for one extra photo of the item next to a note with their username and today's date. Sellers who own the item can send that in a minute.

Is Depop safe to sell on?

Yes, Depop is safe to sell on, but you carry more risk as a seller than as a buyer. Buyer protection covers 3 problems. Seller protection covers one: an item lost or damaged in transit.

Depop decides everything else case by case, including “not as described” claims and account suspensions.

U.S. sellers have paid no Depop selling fee since 2024, only a 3.3% + $0.45 payment processing fee per sale. Depop charges that fee on the item price plus shipping and taxes. Buyers pay a separate Marketplace fee of up to 5% + $1 at checkout.

Similarly, U.K. sellers pay a 2.9% + £0.30 payment processing fee per sale, and Australian sellers (as of July 2026) pay a 2.6% + A$0.30 payment processing fee per sale. Buyers in these locations also pay a separate Marketplace fee of up to 5% + £1 or A$1 at checkout.

Check out this breakdown of how much Depop takes from a sale for examples that are easier to understand.

What Depop seller protection covers

Depop Protection for sellers only covers an item that was:

  • Sold through the Buy button, and not on Depop’s prohibited items list
  • Shipped with a Depop Shipping label within 5 days of the sale
  • Sent to the address on your sales receipt, even if the buyer messages you a different one
  • Lost or damaged in transit, including on a return
  • Worth $300 or less, including shipping and taxes

Buyer disputes and partial refunds

Trustpilot’s summary of over 1,000 recent Depop reviews lists unhelpful dispute decisions, unreliable customer support, slow refunds, and unexpected account suspensions among the main complaints.

Recent seller reviews include:

  • A U.K. seller with almost a decade on Depop and 200+ sales said a buyer asked to keep the item and get a 70% refund. The seller asked for photos; the buyer sent none, and Depop still told the seller to refund. (Ameena K., Trustpilot, October 10th, 2026)
  • One U.S. seller wrote that Depop used the buyer’s photos to rule against them on a pair of sneakers, but the seller appeal form only allowed a written explanation, with no way to attach photos or video. (Anna P., Trustpilot, October 9th, 2026)
  • Another U.S. reviewer said a buyer missed Depop’s 7-day window to return shoes they claimed were fake. Depop released the money to his wife, the seller, then accepted the late return and told her it would refund the buyer. (Richard S., Trustpilot, October 9th, 2026)

You can’t stop a buyer from filing a claim, but you can win more of them. Photograph every flaw before listing, add flat measurements to the description, and film yourself packing the item with the label visible. Upload that video as soon as a case opens.

Offers on Depop aren’t binding. When you accept an offer, the buyer gets 14 days to buy at that price, and until they pay, anyone else can still buy the item at full price. Don’t mark the item as sold on other marketplaces until the buyer pays.

Chargebacks

A buyer can also skip Depop and dispute the charge with their card issuer. Depop’s seller protection terms say that even when Depop doesn’t refund a buyer, the buyer keeps the right to make claims against your shop.

Your defense is a paper trail: You need tracking that shows delivery to the receipt address, your listing photos, your packing video, and your Depop chat history.

Account suspensions

Depop suspends accounts that break its rules, such as listing counterfeits or prohibited items. A U.S. seller wrote in October 2026 that Depop banned them over a purse they say was authentic and held their sales funds for 30 days. (Lisa G., Trustpilot, October 9th, 2026)

Another U.S. seller said that Depop deleted their account, retroactively opened a case, and refunded a buyer who returned a different item. They say Depop ignored their proof of return fraud. (Kateryna V., Trustpilot, July 21st, 2026)

Sellers often get caught out by Depop’s prohibited items list, which bans most electronics, including phones, headphones, game consoles, smartwatches, and hair stylers such as straighteners. Used perfume and testers are banned too. Cameras and lenses are allowed.

Depop doesn’t always block these listings at upload, and it can flag your account later and suspend it.

If it happens to you, follow our step-by-step guide on what to do if your Depop account is suspended. Sellers who crosslist to several marketplaces keep earning on Poshmark, eBay, or Mercari while a Depop appeal is pending.

Depop reviews: What real users are saying

I read through a bunch of the recent Depop reviews. Buyers who report a problem through the app usually get their money back. The complaints I saw were mainly about paying return postage, reaching a person at Depop, and sellers who ghost buyers.

Depop pros

✅ Refund without a return: A buyer ordered a used men’s Under Armour cap and received a new women’s cap that looked like a knockoff. The seller didn’t reply, so the buyer filed a complaint, and Depop refunded the order without asking for the item back. (Cynthia, Trustpilot; October 7th, 2026)

✅ Easy counterfeit refund: Another buyer said Depop made it easy to get their money back after receiving a counterfeit item. (Brian, Trustpilot, October 14th, 2026)

Depop cons

❌ Return postage paid up front: One buyer said Depop agreed the item didn’t match the listing but asked them to pay return postage first and get it back later. They also waited past Depop’s promised 48-hour reply and went back and forth with its AI email assistant before reaching a person. (Lauren H., Trustpilot, October 8th, 2026)

❌ Mislabeled brands: A 3-star reviewer complained that some sellers put designer brand names on items from other brands, so you have to check the garment label in the photos. (Rosalie S., Trustpilot, October 8th, 2026)

❌ Missing details: Another 3-star reviewer said Depop should require sellers to post detailed waist, inseam, and length measurements in inches, so buyers don't have to waste time messaging sellers. (Stacy Beth W., Trustpilot, July 31st, 2026)

Sell more with Nifty

Depop is legit, but if it suspends your shop, the platform can hold unpaid sales funds for up to 180 days, and you lose that income until Depop resolves it. Nifty, a crosslisting and automation tool, lets you manage and crosslist inventory across multiple marketplaces from one interface, so you don’t have to depend on just one platform.

Here’s why sellers and resellers trust Nifty:

  • Customized AI listings: Upload photos and let Nifty generate search-optimized titles, descriptions, and item details. Review the draft, then use custom instructions to shape its writing style.
  • Crosslist now: List eligible items across eBay, Etsy, Poshmark, Whatnot, Mercari, and Depop from one interface instead of re-entering the details on each marketplace. Marketplace access and features depend on your connected accounts and plan.
  • Bulk crosslisting: Select multiple existing listings in Nifty, choose your target marketplaces, pricing, and shipping, then save the AI-generated results as drafts or publish them.
  • Marketplace-specific Pricing Rules: Set a primary marketplace and rules for how prices should change on other marketplaces, so you don’t have to calculate every crosslisted price from scratch.
  • Built-in auto-delisting: Enable auto-delisting and Nifty can remove an eligible sold item from your other connected marketplaces, so you don’t risk selling the same item twice.
  • Bulk tools = less busywork: Relist selected items in batches, schedule ready-to-publish drafts, and use supported automations to handle recurring selling tasks.
  • Analytics and profits, made clearer: Track sales, fees, profit, and your top-selling brands and categories. You can also set seller goals and check your progress from Nifty’s home screen.

Start with a 7-day free trial and keep selling on other marketplaces while a Depop dispute or appeal is open. Nifty is also now available in the U.K. and Australia for sellers on eBay, Etsy, Whatnot, and Depop.

FAQs

1. Is it safe to buy on Depop?

Yes, it's safe to buy on Depop when you pay through Depop checkout with a card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Klarna. Those orders qualify for Depop Protection, which refunds the full price if an item doesn't arrive, arrives damaged, or is significantly not as described. You must report the problem within 30 days of purchase.

2. Do buyers get scammed on Depop?

Yes, buyers do get scammed on Depop, mostly after agreeing to pay or chat off the app. Payments sent through Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal Friends & Family aren't covered by Depop Protection, so the money is gone if the seller disappears. Other common scams are dropshipped fast fashion sold as vintage and phishing emails that copy Depop's branding.

3. How do you tell if a Depop seller is legit?

You can tell if a Depop seller is legit by checking their reviews, recent activity, and photos before you buy. Look for dozens of reviews that mention specific details, an account active in the last few days, and photos with consistent backgrounds. Run one listing photo through Google Lens. If the same image appears on eBay, Shein, or another shop, don't buy.

4. Are Depop items real or fake?

Most Depop items are real, but Depop doesn't authenticate anything before it ships. Counterfeits and mislabeled brands do get listed, especially luxury bags and sneakers. If you receive a fake that was listed as authentic, report it within 30 days for a refund under Depop Protection. For items over $200, ask the seller for a receipt or tag photos before buying.
